the 2010 SEA OLYMPICS!!!!

It was a day just like any other, in the strait of Malacca on a giant floating college campus in the middle of the Indian ocean. The sun was rising, heating the air to a balmy 95 degrees with every counting minute. The Adriatic Sea, 4th floor Bow, Port side, was ready.  I had woken up at 7am, put on my braided white headband, my white swim suit, my white tank top and my white shorts. I slipped on my white watch, some white eyeshadow, and finished off with white war paint, of course.  It was gameday. And we were ready. Ten Seas, but one would be crowned the winner of the 2010 Sea Olympics. We were the Great White Sharks and we were ready for top-of-the-food-chain domination. We started the day with a team breakfast, all dressed in our white outfits, ready for the day of competition ahead. I was our Sea Captain, so I was running around making sure everyone knew what events they were doing, getting everyone pumped up, etc etc. The night before the Olympics we had a huge Opening Ceremonies in the union where we got to run in and do a big cheer and every team was in their colors and sat in their block of the union doing their cheers and such… it was awesome and we kicked off the sea Olympics with a bang.  On our way out to the events, you walked by shark fins on everyone’s doors in our hall (Sea) that I painted with sayings like “Beware of Bloody Waters” and “We’re the reason the red sea is red, WATCH OUT” etc etc, and we had one big poster hanging by the elevators of our floor that said “DANGER: YOU ARE NOW ENTERING SHARK INFESTED WATERS!” with a picture of a shark
The first event of the day was “Sea Feud”, like family feud, where five people from each sea played family feud against each other.. the questions were from a survey that was handed out to students and they were such as “what faculty member would you most like to serenade you”, “favorite dessert on board”, “most photographed thing on the ship” etc etc.. and it works just like family feud where there is a list of the top 5 things that ‘survey says’.. it was very fun to watch, held in the union and everyone cheered.. and of course the ADRIATIC sea won!  Then we headed to watch crab soccer out on the sport deck, where teams of four, four legged players played soccer while ‘crab crawling’ or crawling on your hands and legs with your back in the air above the ground.. we went all the way to the finals and we cheered our team on as they finished second! After that we went and watched the sea sponge scramble out on the pool deck, where teams had to fill buckets with water that they passed from a sponge in the pool back to the bucket.. it was really fun and we did tons of cheering and screaming (we got second!)  all day there are lots of events going on simultaneously, so we’d choose the most fun one to watch and run around from event to event, where I’d make sure everyone was there and pumped up and ready to go! Then it was Trevor and my turn to shine… we were on the dodgeball team.. Quarterback and water polo couple we were ready to dominate with our 2 other team members… the rounds were best of five which were long and hard, but we fought hard and although we didn’t win (we were not the weak links, don’t you worry) we had so sooo much fun. I’m still extremely sore 2 days later from running, dodging, and throwing as hard as I possibly could in that 100 degree weather!  We also watched the trivia bowl, where the Adriatic lost only to the team of professors!! And Trevor competed in “Dean White Says” which was an extreme version of Simon Says.. he made it to the finals because of his intense focus and it was funny to watch him do the silly things that Dean White made him.  One of the best events of the day was the Tug O’ War, which was held out on the pool deck with 500 students surrounding watching and cheering.. we led tons of great white sharks cheers here- singing “who let the sharks out who who who who” to the tune of baha men as well as “SHARKS SHARKS SHARKS SHARKS SHARKS EVERYYYYBODAYYYY” to the  tune of lil’ john song shots. we ended up getting second after winning against every team, except in the championship losing to the red sea, only because their anchor was a Georgia Linebacker, clad in his Georgia underarmor… Fair?
the two biggest events of the day were the Lip Sync, held in the union, and the synchronized swimming competition (see picture for the lifelong learners' team doing theirs haha) in the pool. For the lip sync, each team was randomly assigned a song and we got lucky with a Spice Girls song.. Our routine, choreographed by me and a few other girls, started with five girls dressed up like spice girls in the middle of the stage, who were then pushed off stage by the "spice boyz" then these 5 boys, dressed hilariously like the spice girls lip synced perfectly and did a crackup routine to the song.. it was sooo funny and everyone was talking about it all day
Synchro was so fun to watch as well, as people put on funny costumes and interpretive danced to music in the pool! the lifelong learners were the best though, with their funny swim cap outfits!

There were tons of other events, like hula hooping, extreme musical chairs, asian ice cube pickup (where two people had to move ice cubes with chopsticks as fast as they could--- luckily we had two amazing Chinese students in our sea who won that one!!) and finally all culminated in the giant shipwide relay which had a ton of parts to it ( I did the wheelbarrow race while trev cheered and ran around the ship following our relay to the finish line)… it was an amazing day and as you can tell our sea was dominating! Everybody kept coming up to me telling me how good we were doing and they were jealous… but every sea was out to knock out the top contender, which we definitely were (especially with our amazing spirit and cheers!). the best part of the entire sea Olympics was that literally everybody on the ship got soooo into it. everyone was screaming and cheering, everyone was dressed up fiercely in their color, and everyone was excited about every event and it was just an amazing day. After the relay, the captain legitimately stopped the ship and anchored in the middle of the glassy Indian ocean and our crew pulled together an amazing outdoor barbecue with hamburgers (YUM!) and racks of ribs! It was awesome, they even had the displays of carved fruit out with the desserts it was so nice, and with a beautiful view of the ocean we soaked in the sun, ate some burgers, jumped in the pool to cool down and enjoyed the wonderful life.

After showering, and just about collapsing after cheering, running around, dodgeballing, and being in the sun all day, we headed to the Closing Ceremonies in the union.  It felt so much like OMPA, exhausted after the long day and waiting to hear the results of all our hard work…. Drumroll please…  We got second! Which was a disappointment since we obviously wanted to win and should have won—but second is awesome, so many seas didn’t do well at all and we were the top dogs in every event…. YAY GREAT WHITE SHARKS! It was such a great day and we all had so much fun, both of our voices are a bit gone but it was awesome!!!
